Sorry I didn't get to post yesterday! I know there must have been some of you diligently checking to see if I had updated or not. Haha...yeah right. We just had a quite busy day yesterday so I didn't get a chance to blog.
We slept in again yesterday since it was our last chance to sleep in for a while (we started classes this morning). After we got up we had our normal breakfast (bread and jam) and then we hung around the house for most of the morning/afternoon. Julia's daughter and son-in-law came over and joined us for lunch. We had pasta with tomato sauce and eggplant. We also had salad and for dessert, Tiffany and I's favorite, a plum! (We love when we get fruit---it's just so great here) After lunch we hung around the house getting stuff ready for class to start.
Then around 3 yesterday we left to explore the main center of the city. We took the bus from the bus stop near our house to one closest to the city's center. (It is just ridiculously hot in the afternoons here - think at least 100 degrees and having to walk 30 minutes or more in the direct heat) So really, we were just saving ourselves from dehydration. Once we got off the bus stop we were able to wander a little more into different shops and to see different sights.
We went inside a little tourist shop (bad, I know) but only to buy postcards. Then we went to La Catedral which is the third largest cathedral in the world. It's free to go in on Sundays (otherwise it costs 1,50 euro) but we could only go in part of it because they have mass on Sundays. But don't worry, we have a group tour for UNC study abroad program coming up in the next couple of weeks. So there will be more pictures to come of the Cathedral. :) (pics below)
After the cathedral we just wandered around in the little shops and such around the main city center. We stopped at a little coffee place and got ice cream. I had one scoop of strawberry and one scoop of brownie. The brownie wasn't that great...but I should've known better than to get it considering I'm not crazy about chocolate. The strawberry was wonderful though. :) (pics of that below as well) We also stopped in one place and got a Coke! Haven't had soft drinks since arriving, so I knew I could indulge in one.
After that, we headed back home. We didn't take the bus back home since it was a little later at this point and had cooled down considerably. The walk was actually pretty nice and it was great that we found a shorter way to walk back! We had been going around our elbow to get to our thumb, but I knew there must be a shortcut, and I finallllllly found it.
Once we got back, we started working on the wireless internet because it had stopped working earlier. Julia's daughter and son-in-law were helping us, but we still weren't having much luck. We stopped to eat dinner which was PIZZA!!! It was fantastic. We had been talking earlier that day about how badly we wanted pizza, and our senora must have read our minds! :) Then we set back to work on the internet. Her son and daughter-in-law and their two kids (boys, 2 and 5 approximately) came over and they all ate dinner together. The boys wound up staying last night and are still here. They are so precious. The sad thing is that I think they speak better Spanish than me...even the 2 year old. :( Oh well.
Three hours after starting work on the router and the wireless internet I FINALLY got it to work. No idea what made it work, but at least it's up and running again. After three hours of working on it though, I was just so frustrated and tired that the last thing I felt like doing was updating my blog. Sorry guys!
Today we started classes though. These are just two 3 week classes for right now and they are taught by native Spainards but through the UNC program. One of them seems like it will be pretty intense. Like I said, it's only 3 weeks but we have 7 compositions to write and 1 15-min presentation...IN THREE WEEKS. Holy cow. But the other one is a little more laid back. The professor is HILARIOUS and it seems like the class will be more interesting. It focuses more on culture and history and the like.
For lunch today we had the best rice I have ever had. Julia said she made it with olive oil and scallions but it was missing one herb that she normally puts in it. Oh well, it tasted fantastic to me without it! We also had "tortillitas de gambas" or little shrimp tortillas. It was basically these small shrimp inside of a flour/egg typed coating. They were phenomenal! :) Again, I still haven't had any food that I didn't like. It really surprises me, but I'm loving it!
But for now I should probably go work on some homework. :( I'll write more either tonight or tomorrow afternoon sometime! :) Pictures are below!
This is the fountain near the main city center.
This is the old tobbaco factory...i think?
The absolutely gorgeous and stunning Cathedral!
